“Quantum Space”, paintings by James Massena March
Friday, October 12 – November 3
Opening Reception – Friday, October 12, 6pm-9pm
James March will be exhibiting examples of his continuing explorations of pictorial space in vivid, geometric abstractions. He will include recent paintings from several different series, with many coming from the Quantum series. One such painting will be Event Horizon, a 7×10 ft. work that explores “the warping of space-time in the vicinity of a black hole.” Additional concerns evident in the work include structure and composition, the formal and expressive potential of color relationships, and a precise, complex method of paint application. Despite the appearance of a precisely delineated plan, an intuitive process of exploration is generally how the work comes about. The resulting images are an imaginative, even disorienting, blend of physical and mental spaces.
James March was born in Cleveland and attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. He received a BA from Cleveland State University and an MFA from Kent State University. He has exhibited extensively on a regional and national level. His work is in the collections of PNC Bank, Cleveland State University and Case Western Reserve University, among others, and was awarded the Ohio Arts Prize for Painting in 2009.
