Melinda Laszczynski’s Formal Seductions
Based on a process of play and experimentation, my work takes the form of paintings and collage. I privilege paint as material through the use of stains, drips, and layers on cloth and paper to explore formal issues of balance, structure, and composition. Oppositional relationships of figure and ground, flatness and space encourage careful examination and decelerated perception. An initial gesture alludes to chance and immediacy, and consequential marks imply duration and rhythm. Colors and forms reminiscent of bodily sensations entice the viewer to explore materiality. I intend for my work to provide an aesthetic experience that evokes a fluctuating, sensuous space that the viewer can become lost in.
