FROM THE SAN JUAN TO THE CUYAHOGA: Artist Books from Ediciones Vigia (Cuba)
April 7 – May 19
Ediciones Vigia is an artisanal, small press literary publishing shop near the Rio San Juan in Matanzas, Cuba. Just as the Cuyahoga defines Cleveland, so the river San Juan defines Matanzas. Ediciones Vigia produces books by hand, including a series of emerging poets of the region, the Coleccion San Juan, which is named for the river. In cooperation with CAN Journal, Waterloo Arts presents this exhibit of elaborate artist books, made entirely from recycled materials–revealing remarkable connections with the artist book and literary small press scene in Cleveland.
Ediciones Vigia books are edited by Laura Ruiz Montes, who is in Cleveland in Spring 2017, hosted by CAN Journal through the Cleveland Foundation’s Creative Fusion program. Her primary project here involves meeting Latino artists of Cleveland, and writing about their work for CAN. We are fortunate to have this window on the art book / literary publishing scene, which has remarkable parallels in our own community. Her writing about Cleveland artists will appear on CAN Blog and in upcoming print editions of CAN Journal.
