Call for Artists:
Waterloo Arts is looking for artists to help transform a 3000 sf indoor space into an immersive, black lit art experience that will be open for Brite Winter and the Annual DayGlo Exhibit at Waterloo Arts. Artists will have access to the space for 5 weeks starting February 1. The amount of space given to each artist or artist team will be determined after January 27 when we know how many artists are involved. While we don’t have funding to give each artist a stipend, we are providing support in other ways. See below for more details.
Background:
Waterloo Arts has been involved with revitalization efforts in Collinwood for the past 25 years and during that time we have seen vacant spaces be renovated and put back into use, which is the goal but we recognize that as cities revitalize, there are fewer raw, unfinished spaces that lend themselves to artistic transformation where artists can experiment freely. We are pausing before refinishing our space so it can be used as an experimental artistic space.
Details:
- Space – Artists will have daily access to the installation space from Feb 1 through March 5. The amount of space given to each artist will be determined after we confirm the number of participating artists. The space is not subdivided and collaboration with other artists will be necessary to achieve a cohesive whole.
- Supplies – Waterloo Arts has many supplies on hand and will be providing DayGlo paint, courtesy of the DayGlo Color Corp. We encourage artists to use the available supplies or other recycled material. If additional supplies are needed, however, Waterloo Arts will help to secure donations or make purchases when necessary.
- Technical Assistance – We are hoping that artists with various skills will participate and will be willing to help each other out but we also have people adept at building on hand to assist. We encourage artists to use some of the great resources in our community like the Sears think[box] and consider teaming up with other artists.
- Community – We would love this to be a rewarding experience for artists and one that builds community. To that end, we will host a kick-off party on Saturday, January 31 to connect artists, go over the supplies we have on-hand, brainstorm, and go over logistics of the space. Between Feb 1 and Mar 5 we will host weekly work sessions where we provide dinner. Dates will be determined at the kick off.
- Promo – AfterGlo is a part of Brite Winter and the DayGlo Exhibition and it will be promoted along with those events. We will also do online artist spotlights and have printed materials identifying your part of the installation. We encourage participating artists to attend both Brite Winter (Feb 21) and the opening reception for the DayGlo show (March 6)
