Northeast Ohio native Judy Giera is a multidisciplinary artist who makes mixed media works that explore the psychological stakes and cultural realities of surviving as a transgender woman in the present moment. Giera’s show And it can give some joy challenges the violently hostile political climate that attempts to govern transgender women out of public spaces and away from accessible healthcare by creating her signature sculptural paintings (or “paint(h)ings”) that embody a sense of transgender joy, and exist in spite of hatred and bigotry.
Judy Giera’s And it can give some joy opens to view on April 7th at Waterloo Arts Gallery (15605 Waterloo Rd). A public reception will also take place during First Fridays Walk All Over Waterloo on Friday, April 7th from 6-9pm with the opening of Elena Masrour’s Bingo, I’m the King Now in the Waterloo Arts Café. This exhibition will be open to visit through May 20th during regular gallery hours on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 12pm-4pm, and by appointment on weekdays. Judy Giera holds an MFA in Art-Painting (Lehman College-City University of New York), an MFA in Theatre (The Actors Studio Drama School at Pace University) and spent a year in the graduate Performance + Performance Studies program at Pratt Institute. Her work has been seen in both solo and group exhibitions at venues including the Hudson River Museum, SPANTZO, Ceres Gallery, Amos Eno Gallery, Gallery Aferro, White Columns (Online), and BronxArtSpace, Trestle Gallery among others. Her evening length performance with soundscape, ‘Blanche On A Winter’s Eve’ premiered at the United Solo Theatre Festival, garnering an award from festival organizers, and was curated into the First International Human Rights Arts Festival in 2017. Giera’s work has been featured in Vellum Magazine, Art511, and Art Spiel and she is a 2022 AIM Fellow with the Bronx Museum of the Arts. Recently, Judy joined the staff of the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art, the only dedicated LGBTQ+ art museum in the world, as their Collections Manager.
