Who we are, Where we live: A Collinwood Community Arts Program—Final Event!
Throughout October, artist and poet Cindy Washabaugh has been facilitating community writing workshops at The Slovenian Workmen’s Home, The Collinwood Recreation Center and here at Waterloo Arts, as part of an exciting creative arts program. Who we are, Where we live is multi-faceted and designed to give space to the diverse voices that comprise our community. For some, stories and memories of Collinwood date back to the 1940’s and before. For others, these memories and stories are just beginning to unfold.
On the afternoon of Saturday, November 14, we invite all community members from Collinwood and beyond to come together for:
1:30 Appetizers and refreshments
2:00 A brief reading of “written sketches” from participants, created in workshops in 30 minutes or less, which provide a peek into their varied lives. Some were written by people brand new to Collinwood, some by community artists and advocates, some by Rec Center seniors, and some by lifelong members of the Slovenian Workmen’s Home, now in their 80’s and 90’s. All have been gathered in a community anthology, along with photographs of participants and of Collinwood today. Copies of the anthology will be presented to workshop participants at this celebration and available at print cost to attendees.
2:30 Free drawings for gift certificates to Collinwood establishments and meeting and mingling with friends, old and new.
And throughout, a view of dazzlingly-colored spirit flags flying above Waterloo Arts, made by workshop participants at Praxis Fiber Arts Workshop, to send out hopes for Collinwood’s future and memories of its past.
If you haven’t had a chance to be involved with this enthusiastically-received community arts program, this is your last opportunity. Please join us!
